Bo Jackson to Josh Jacobs: ‘Run a (expletive) over’

Las Vegas running back Josh Jacobs turned in the top rushing total of his 2023 season on Sunday night in the Raiders’ 16-12 victory over the New York Jets.

After the former Alabama ball-carrier gained 116 yards on 27 carries, Jacobs said he followed the advice of former Auburn All-American and Raiders great Bo Jackson.

“I think that the wins like this, especially against that type of defense – to be able to grind it out, to compete – it really felt like a slugfest out there,” Jacobs said. “I was getting hit by three or four people some plays. I’m like, ‘Damn.’ But I’m getting back up and I’m like, ‘All right, we’re going to come back at you.’

“I talked to Bo Jackson this week, and he just told me, he said, ‘Man, you run a (expletive) over. You pick him up and you say, “All right, I’m going to come back 40 seconds later.”’ And I tried to have that mentality today.”

Since Las Vegas fired coach Josh McDaniels, offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi and general manager Dave Ziegler, the Raiders have won both their games to even their record at 5-5.

On Sunday night, the scoring had been limited to field goals when Jacobs broke up the middle for a 40-yard gain on the next-to-last play of the third quarter. Jacobs’ run to the Jets 13-yard line set up the game’s only touchdown three snaps later to break a 9-9 tie.

Jacobs said he got good advice for that run, too, from Raiders right guard Greg Van Roten.

“We was in the huddle, literally,” Jacobs said. “Greg told me, ‘Man, look, they want you to bounce outside. Keep it inside. Just trust it.’ I was like, ‘OK. I got you.’ Literally, that next play, we hit a big one, so that was really him.”

Jacobs led the NFL in rushing last season with 1,653 yards. But through the first eight games this season, Jacobs had averaged 51 yards on 16.6 carries.

In the two games since the Raiders made linebackers coach Antonio Pierce the interim head coach and moved Bo Hardegree from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, Jacobs has run for 214 yards and two touchdowns on 53 carries.

“The thing that I like about Bo the most is, obviously, he takes his chances and things like that,” Jacobs said, “but also he listens to the other coaches. If we feel like something is not working or we feel like we didn’t get to a play that we needed to get to, he goes in there and he listens to the coaches and he goes out there and calls it. The biggest thing that I like about him is he’s coachable, too.”

Las Vegas returns to action against the Miami Dolphins at noon CST Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
